Most home service websites don't get calls for one of two reasons: not enough of the right people find them, or the people who visit can't quickly see what you do, trust you, and contact you. Fixing visibility, mobile usability, your call-to-action and after-hours lead capture usually makes the biggest difference.
You paid for a website, or spent weekends building one, and the phone still isn't ringing from it. That is frustrating, and it is one of the most common complaints we hear from contractors. The good news is that the causes are usually fixable, and most fall into a short list.
Work through these nine fixes in order. The first few are the most common culprits.
First, is anyone actually visiting your site?
Before you change anything, figure out which problem you have. There are really two:
- Nobody finds the site. Low traffic means few calls no matter how good the site is.
- People visit but don't call. Traffic is there, but the site isn't turning it into leads.
If you have Google Analytics or a similar tool, check visits. If not, check your Google Business Profile insights to see how many people click through to your website. Then pick the fixes below that match your problem.
1. Is your site showing up in local searches?
Search your main service and your town on your phone. If you aren't on the first page or in the map results, very few homeowners will ever see your site. Local visibility is built with a strong Google Business Profile, clear service pages, service area info and helpful content. Our guide on local SEO for contractors covers the basics, and how to show up in the Google Maps 3-Pack goes deeper on the map results.
2. Is your phone number hard to find or tap?
This is the most common fix, and the easiest. Your number should sit at the top of every page and be a tap-to-call link on mobile. Test it: open your site on your phone and tap the number. If it doesn't dial, that is lost calls every day.
3. Does the site look bad or broken on phones?
If text is tiny, buttons are cramped or the page slides sideways, mobile visitors leave. Most homeowners find you on a phone, so this one matters a lot. See why a mobile-first website matters for what good looks like.
4. Is the site slow to load?
People with a problem are impatient. A page that takes a long time to show anything on a cellular connection loses visitors before they ever see your number. Large photos and cheap hosting are the usual suspects. Our article on website speed and leads explains what to check.
5. Is it unclear what you do and where?
A visitor should know within a few seconds that you are, for example, "a licensed plumber serving [your county]." If your top section says something like "Welcome to our website" or a vague slogan, rewrite it. Name the service, name the area, and give one reason to choose you.
6. Is there nothing that builds trust?
Homeowners are letting you into their house. They want proof. Add real project photos, a few reviews with first names and towns, your license number if your trade has one, and a short "about the owner" section. Remove anything that makes the business look stale, like an old copyright year or a dead social media link.
7. Are you only offering one way to make contact?
Some people want to call. Others are at work, or it is 10 p.m., and they would rather fill out a form or ask a quick question by chat. If the only option is a phone number that goes to voicemail, you lose the people who don't like calling. Add a short quote form and consider a chat or AI receptionist that can answer questions and take down details at any hour.
8. Is your quote form too long, or broken?
Fill out your own form right now. Did the lead reach your inbox? How long did it take? Did it land in spam? Forms that ask ten questions before saying hello also scare people away. Ask only for what you need to call back: name, phone, address or zip, and a short description.
9. Are leads arriving but getting missed?
Sometimes the website is working, but leads go to an old email address, a shared inbox nobody watches, or a voicemail box that is full. Check where every form, chat and call actually goes. A lead that waits two days for a reply is often already hired by someone else.
A 30-minute website check you can do today
- Search your top service plus town on your phone. Note where you appear.
- Open your site on cellular data. Count how long until you see the phone number.
- Tap the number. Make sure it dials the right phone.
- Read only the top of the home page. Is it clear what you do and where?
- Look for real photos, reviews and license info.
- Submit your own quote form. Time how long until it reaches you.
- Visit after hours and ask: what would a homeowner with an urgent problem do right now?
- Write down every problem you find, then fix the top three first.
What if you've fixed everything and it's still quiet?
Then the issue is usually visibility. Your site may simply not have enough content for Google and AI search to understand what you do and recommend you. Service pages, area pages and helpful articles that answer homeowner questions build that over time. It is slower than flipping a switch, but it compounds.
A practical starting point: list the ten questions homeowners ask you most often on estimates. "How long will this take?" "Do I need a permit?" "Should I repair or replace?" Each one can become a short, helpful page or article. Over a few months, those pages give Google more reasons to show your site, give AI tools something to quote, and give visitors the confidence to pick up the phone. Keep each answer specific to your trade and your area, written the way you would explain it in someone's driveway.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my website get visitors but no calls?
Usually because visitors can't quickly tell what you do, don't see enough proof to trust you, or can't easily contact you on a phone. A clear headline, tap-to-call number, real photos and a short form fix most of it.
How do I know if people are visiting my website?
Use a tool like Google Analytics, or check your Google Business Profile insights to see how many people click through to your website.
Can a slow website really cost me calls?
Yes. Homeowners with a problem are impatient, and many will leave a page that takes too long to load on their phone before they ever see your number.
What should happen when someone fills out my website form?
The lead should reach an inbox you check often, within minutes. Test your own form regularly so you know it works and isn't landing in spam.
